Socialist Newspapers

We look at a range of socialist newspapers that continue to educate and inform the working class. First we look at the international scene and then a number of excellent publications here in Australia.

International socialist newspapers play a crucial role in spreading socialist ideas, while promoting global solidarity among leftist movements. They often cover a range of topics, including labour rights, anti-imperialism, social justice, and economic equality.

Socialist Media Outlets

Most of the publications listed below are not produced by commercial media organisations, rather, they are produced by political parties or organisations committed to socialism.

However, technology has changed the media world with many fine journalists and commentators delivering news and content direct to people on platforms such as Substack. These include:

Morning Star Newspaper

Morning star is the only English-language socialist daily in the U.K. Founded in 1930 as the Daily Worker, it is cooperatively owned by its readers. Moreover, it follows a communist and anti-imperialist line, with a focus on trade union and social movements.

Solidarity: A USA Socialist Newspaper

Solidarity is a weekly socialist newspaper from the USA. It is edited by Martin Thomas and published by the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty (AWL). Solidarity was launched in the mid-1990s as a monthly titled Action for Health and Welfare. Subsequently, the paper became a fortnightly and changed its name to Action for Solidarity. Thus, it became more closely identified with the AWL, before finally shortening its name to Solidarity and adopting its current weekly frequency.

Solidarity Australia

Solidarity Australia has a number of branches in Australia. Moreover, it publishes Solidarity which provides a much-needed socialist analysis of everything from the repression of Gaza by Israel, to ICE murders in Minneapolis. More recently the cockroach movement in India has gained attention and analysis.

Socialist Workers Party website

The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) is a revolutionary party with branches across Britain. Indeed, they fight against fascism and environmental destruction. So check out their website.

Socialist Workers Party Membership

The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) is funded by members who pay regular subscriptions (suggested amounts based on income). Consequently, they receive the publications, Socialist Worker, and journal, International Socialism.

Socialist Workers Party Newspaper

The Socialist Worker newspaper is published in the U.K. It covers a range of topics from a socialist perspective, including labour struggles, social justice movements, and international politics. This newspaper also features opinion pieces and analysis from socialist writers and activists.

The Militant Socialist Newspaper

Since 1928, the Militant has been “a socialist newsweekly published in the interests of working people”. Hence, it reflects the program, perspectives and activities of the Socialist Workers Party in the United States.

Marxist Socialist Newspapers

Australia has a rich history of socialist and leftist publications. These include Red Flag published by Socialist Alternative and Green Left News published by Socialist Alliance .

Socialist Alternative Australia

Socialist Alternative (SA) is a Trotskyist political organisation active primarily in the United States, with sister groups in other countries like Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, and Ireland. As a result, it is Anti-capitalist, advocating for a democratically planned economy. Indeed, the party supports workers’ control, public ownership of major industries, and radical wealth redistribution. It also opposes capitalism, imperialism, racism, sexism, and LGBTQ+ oppression.

Red Flag Newspaper

This newspaper established by Socialist Alternative, stands for solidarity, struggle, internationalism and socialism. Red Flag features analysis, radical history, Marxist theory and artwork from leading left wing writers, designers and artists. The Red Flag is published bi-weekly and is also associated with the podcast Red Flag Radio.

While advocating struggle and revolution the Red Flag covers everything from Palestine Solidarity and the actions of the Israeli fascist Benjamin Netanyahu to the climate crisis and freedom movements around the globe.

Socialist Alliance

Socialist Alliance is an Australian socialist political party and activist organisation. Moreover, it was founded in 2001 as an alliance of various socialist organisations and activists, initiated by the Democratic Socialist Perspective and the International Socialist Organisation. Socialist Alliance publishes the Green Left.

Green Left Socialist Newspaper

Green Left (GL) is not-for-profit, activist media, carrying the news, analysis & debates of environmental and social justice campaigns and movements. indeed this is a paper by and for the green and progressive movement. It covers the controversies and the concerns on issues like Palestine, Trump, hunger and healthcare as well as socialist protests, achievements and celebrations.

Socialist Appeal: UK Socialist Newspaper

Socialist Appeal was the name of a British Trotskyist organisation and its associated newspaper founded in 1992. In 2024 Socialist Appeal reformed as the Revolutionary Communist Party.

Jacobin Magazine

The Nation

The Nation is one of the oldest and most respected progressive publications in the United States. While a lot of what’s going on in the world is fairly bleak, The Party Line will try and highlight voices of resistance and struggle.

New Politics

New Politics is the best analysis and discussion about Australian politics and #auspol news. Indeed, presenters Eddy Jokovich and David Lewis look at all the issues the mainstream media wants to cover up, and do the job most journalists avoid: holding power to account.

Blowback Podcast

The Blowback is one of the best socialist podcasts about American history and foreign policy, hosted by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James. Indeed, Blowback was “painstakingly researched” and didactic in its approach, “bombarding the listener with the host’s sturm-und-drang argument about the Iraq War as a portal to hell that directly caused our modern-day political ills”. Black Socialist Podcasts

Some of the most influential Black socialist podcasts include the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) Another podcast for revolutionary Black nationalist socialism, The Black Myths offers critical radical analysis, and Revolutionary Left Radio for deep dives into Black Marxist theory.

However, for meticulously researched long-form historical series, seek out “The Marxist Voice” (formerly Proles of the Round Table).

Further, for history woven into sharp analysis of current events, “The Socialist Program with Brian Becker” is essential. Moreover, for a more accessible and often humorous exploration of radical history and utopian thought, “Srsly Wrong” is a unique gem. World Socialist Radio

Official podcast of The Socialist Party of Great Britain. We have one single aim: the establishment of a society in which all productive resources – land, water, factories, transport, etc. – are taken into common ownership, and in which the sole motive for production is the fulfilment of human needs and wants.

Socialist Radio A World on Fire

For the Communist Party, socialist radio is delivered via podcast. The party has two podcasts: Marxist Voice (education, theory, and history) and A World On Fire (current events and analysis). These podcasts critique capitalism and expose the dangers of the far-right, while promoting the ideals of communism. This includes support for Palestine solidarity and communism around the world.

Socialist Journalists

A list of the most prominent contemporary socialist journalists would certainly include the British columnist and author Owen Jones, known for his work with The Guardian and his substantial social media presence, and Grace Blakeley, a staff writer for Tribune and author of Vulture Capitalism. In the United States, Bhaskar Sunkara, the founder and editorial director of Jacobin magazine, is a central figure, having built one of the most influential socialist publications of the modern era.

Among the earlier generation of socialist journalists, Paul Foot was a legendary British investigative journalist and long-time member of the Socialist Workers Party, known for his powerful writing and campaigns. Similarly, A. B. Magil was a prominent Marxist journalist and pamphleteer in the United States. Other notable names include Alex Niven, the new editor of Tribune, and Harold Meyerson, an American journalist aligned with socialist and progressive ideologies.

Socialist Radio Organisations

If you’re interested in getting involved in socialist media, there are a few different paths you can take. One option is to start your own podcast. A great source of content are the many socialist newspapers you can find online.

You can also look for existing socialist radio programs and volunteer to help with production, research, or outreach. Additionally, many socialist organisations have their own shows or podcasts. Getting involved with a local group can be a great way to connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to the movement.

Set during the Great Depression, Modern Times follows Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp character as he struggles to cope with the relentless, soul-crushing efficiency of the assembly line. This struggle leads to a mental breakdown. Later, after his release from hospital, his misadventures continue as he inadvertently leads a communist demonstration and is sent to jail. Through its brilliant physical comedy and social commentary, the film critiques the exploitation of workers, while ultimately championing the resilience of the human spirit in the face of a harsh and rapidly changing world.

October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1927) – Director: Sergei Eisenstein

Another Eisenstein masterpiece, this film from Russia chronicles the 1917 Russian Revolution, portraying the rise of the Bolsheviks and the overthrow of the Provisional Government, in celebration of the socialist revolution.

Salt of the Earth (1954) – Socialist Movie by Herbert J. Biberman

Based on a real miners’ strike in New Mexico, this film focuses on Mexican-American workers fighting as comrades for equal pay and better working conditions. It was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for its pro-labour and feminist themes.

The Bicycle Thieves (1948) – Socialist Movie by Vittorio De Sica

An Italian neorealist film that portrays the plight of the working class in post-war Italy. So the main character’s desperate search for his stolen bicycle reflects the harsh realities of poverty and unemployment under capitalism.

The Grapes of Wrath (1940) – Socialist Movie by Director: John Ford

Based on John Steinbeck’s novel, this film follows a family of tenant farmers displaced by the Dust Bowl and forced into migrant labour. It’s a stark depiction of economic injustice, while highlighting the culture of solidarity among the working class.

Z (1969) – A Socialist movie by Director: Costa-Gavras

A political thriller based on real events in Greece, “Z” exposes corruption, political repression, and also the fight against fascism. The film critiques authoritarianism while championing resistance movements often aligned with socialist causes.

• American Psycho (2000): American Psycho follows the life of a wealthy 1980s investment banker, Patrick Bateman. As he commits a series of increasingly gruesome murders, the film satirically reveals how his shallow, consumerist society is so obsessed with image that it remains wilfully blind to the monstrous reality lurking beneath the surface.
• Land and Freedom (1995): This film tells the story of a young British communist who travels to Spain to join the freedom fight against Franco’s fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. So it deals with internal struggles within leftist movements and the broader fight for socialism.
• Motorcycle Diaries (2004): The Motorcycle Diaries depicts the formative journey of a young Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara across South America. Moreover, the film charts his awakening social conscience as he witnesses the profound poverty and systemic injustice faced by the continent’s marginalised people. consequently, these experiences plant the seeds of socialist ideology in this future revolutionary leader.

• Persepolis (2007): An animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel about growing up during the Iranian Revolution, “Persepolis” explores themes of resistance, political struggle, and the desire for social justice.
• Sicko (2007): This documentary critiques the American healthcare system, advocating for a socialist-style universal healthcare system, while comparing it to other countries where healthcare is a public right.

• Sorry We Missed You (2019): Another Ken Loach film, it focuses on the gig economy and the exploitation faced by delivery workers in contemporary Britain. It highlights the dehumanising effects of capitalism and precarious labour conditions.
